7) #BlackHistoryMonth Dr. Patrick Griffith, MD
Dr. Patrick Griffith, MD, FAAN Adjunct Professor University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas.
Dr. Patrick A. Griffith has been at the forefront of Alzheimer's research and advocacy for more than five decades. Just when Alzheimer's disease was being recognized as an emerging health issue for African Americans,
Dr. Griffith, who at the time was chair of the Department of Neurology and director of the Clinical Research Center at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, was the lead investigator on studies of Alzheimer's in Blacks. An expert on the diagnosis, management, and treatment of dementia, particularly vascular dementia, and the prevention of stroke in black Americans, his research continues to lay the groundwork for research on the health conditions of African Americans as a contributing factor to Alzheimers.
In my film In Our Right Mind, I interview Dr. Griffith and three generations of his family as they discuss their connection to fighting Alzheimer’s because of the family’s matriarch.
